How Fertility Planning Works
Fertility planning uses your cycle data to project future fertile windows and ovulation days across multiple months. The calculation is based on the principle that ovulation typically occurs a fixed number of days before your next period, determined by your luteal phase length. By projecting your cycle start dates forward and counting backward by your luteal phase, the planner estimates when ovulation will occur in each future cycle.
The fertile window for each cycle spans approximately six days: the five days before ovulation and ovulation day itself. Research published by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) shows that the highest probability of conception occurs with intercourse in the one to two days leading up to ovulation. The probability drops significantly the day after ovulation, since the egg is viable for only 12 to 24 hours. By identifying your peak days across multiple cycles, this planner helps you focus your efforts on the days most likely to result in conception.
It is important to understand that calendar-based predictions become less reliable the further out they go, since even small cycle length variations compound over time. For the most accurate fertility planning, the ASRM and ACOG recommend combining calendar methods with ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), basal body temperature tracking, and cervical mucus monitoring. This tool is for planning and educational purposes only. It is not a substitute for medical advice, and it should not be relied upon as a method of contraception. If you have been trying to conceive for 12 months without success (or 6 months if you are over 35), consult your OB-GYN or a reproductive endocrinologist.
